During the first half of this class I learned a lot about myself as a writer. I knew that I've always liked to write but I never had a reason to when I wasn't in school. I have grown to love writing and I feel like I've continued to show improvements from my about me page to all of my blogs. The writing reflection was a big help throughout this course, it made think about everything I've ever written and why. I would like to think that I am a good writer, but it has always be a challenge for me. I've never thought about a writing process or why I wrote certain things. I owe a lot of thanks to Professor Mangini because in a short amount of time he helped me to challenge myself to become a better writer, From all of the times he made us write non-stop to other times when he made us jot down our thoughts to save for later, These methods were very helpful to me. Every blog I write I see so much improvement and that motivates me me to do even better next blog. I do understand that it is only the middle of the semester and there is definitely more room for improvement but I've come such a long way and I know it will only get better. Something I have learned about myself as writer is that I am pretty bad ass!! I've also learned that I make a lot of mistakes and that is okay. You have to crawl before you walk. When I write I like to work alone which I've said before is always the best approach for me but, maybe, I could use someone elses feedback, After I write something I always go back and reread it and I notice I would have a lot of misspellings and grammatical errors. I definitely see myself working with someone to help me write or revise my writings in the near future, this may just work to my advantage in making me become a better writer. I look forward to moving on in this class and seeing how much my writing has improved at the end of the semester.

For my film-based project, I worked alone as always, this has time and time again been the best approach for me. I enjoy working alone because I can write how I want, its my own ideas and I can revise it as much as I want. Honestly there was nothing difficult about my writing process this time around because I was certain on what topic I was going to chose which was the different types of parenting styles. My writing process has continued to excel so it was very easy to get started on this project as far as the subject and the writing, I wrote this project in the form of letter which gave me a lot of room to express how I really felt about the movie and their behavior. I feel like it was easy to do this because it was like I was talking directly to the characters of the movie. The reason I chose to write about the different parenting styles is because I am very interested in the psychology of it and I have a lot of knowledge on that topic, I am currently taking a psychology class and we just finished up a lesson on the four different parenting styles and I thought the relation of that subject to the movie was very significant. This topic absolutely worked in my favor because I found a lot of good points that I could get into depth about. Although at first I thought this movie was a horrible choice, I second that thought now because my project ended up being pretty bad ass, With some revisions I think this will be my Final assignment. I plan on revising this project to make it perfect, I think I am off to a good start. I will start by adding more detail, and basically finding more information that relates to my topic..
Prompt:
Step Brothers is a movie about two 40 year old men who are very similar in many ways. They both are lazy, jobless and live with their parents. Robert Dobeck and Nancy Huff are the parents of Dale Dobeck and Brennan Huff who immediately marry after meeting. When the boys find out they're moving in together it turns the overgrowing boys world upside down. Brennan and Dale aren't to fond of each other when they first meet but, eventually they become close when they find out they have many things in common. Robert eventually becomes fed up with both the boys actions and lays down the law, telling them they have one week to find a job. During the short time of the families living together, Dale and Brennan get used to each other and their actions draw Nancy and Robert away from each other causing them to end their marriage. Brennan's younger brother Derek who always overshadows Brennan ends up offering to sell the parents home and they agree, forcing the step bothers to move out on their own. During the brothers last night in the home they end up fighting over whose fault it was that the marriage ended. The next morning they move out and don't speak to each other for months.
While living their adult lives Brennan starts to work for Derek and takes on the Catalina wine mixer, Dale becomes a caterer. At this event Brennan puts together, Dale ironically ends up being the caterer. Both parents show up to support their sons but the events falls apart because the band quits. This forces Brennan and Dale to work together and use their talents. Somehow their parents rekindle their love and basically live happy ever after. My only critique of this movie is that it wasn't funny to me because I've literally watched it 100 times. But other than that the movie is awesome and gives you a great laugh if your'e in need of one. Three important quotes:
The film that I have chosen for this movie madness tournament is called The Iceman. This movie is a true story based on Richard Kuklinski who was a contract killer/mafia hitman for the Genovese family. He also worked for Newark's DeCavalcante crime family and New York City's Five Families, including the Gambinos. He started off as a hitman at the age of 18. Shortly after he met his wife and she knew nothing of his work, he was living a double life. At fisrt he worked dubbing pornographic films which he then supplies to a mob operated syndicate, but he tells his family that he dubs Disney cartoons. When he starts to supply to mob with porn is when he was introduced to them. They wanted him to be apart of their mob after they witnessed him have a fight in the bar later killing the man. He was known as the "iceman" because after he killed his victims he froze their bodies for a long period of time. This unfortunately started to catch up him when it was a summer day and there was a body found that was still frozen internally. He was also known for the crazy ways that he killed people such as putting a rope around someones neck and dragging them causing strangulation, using crossbows, and his personal favorite cyanide. A possible writing topic could be. how a persons environment effect their lifestyle.
When composing my academic mindset project, I worked alone. This approach always works well for me because there aren't to many distractions. I also don't have to answer to anyone when it comes to my own work. There is never a difficult part about working alone, in my opinion it is very beneficial. There aren't hundreds of opinions I have to listen to or I don't have to feel bad about disagreeing with someone. Overcoming this was very easy and didn't have much of an effect on me. This time I wrote this blog in the living room, as I had mentioned before my son is always playing in there so its hard to get things done. But on this particular day I was home alone with the exception o my son. He napped for an unbelievable 3 hours, I had so much time to get my thoughts together. This was a great approach because in that amount of time I got all of my work done. I wrote this blog a few days ago which sucked because I didn't start working on it right away and that pushed me back a little. I will say that this approach wasn't a very good one. I definitely needed more time instead of having to cram it all into one day. I very much agreed with Carol Dweck on her opinion of growth and fixed mindsets. She gave so many examples which lead me to believe she has a strong argument on this topic. I haven't yet revised my project but when I do I plan on adding a lot more detail so it's more comprehensible. I definitely won't wait until the last minute to do so, I will still to my normal writing process.
In this Non Cognitive Report, Teaching Adolescents to Become Learners there are many different topics discussed. One of the most important topics are the academic mindsets which are belonging, growth mindset, self efficiency and relevance/purpose. Out of those mindsets I feel as though growth mindset applies to me the most. By a growth mindset I mean believing you can develop your abilities through hard work and dedication. You're able to take constructive criticism and use it to better whatever it is you're that your working on. You work hard to get where you want to be.
Having this mindset here at DCCC is most important because I can easily achieve academic success. I do very well with constructive criticism , I feel like it is the most helpful feedback you could get. It makes me want to do better and work harder, my goal is to always learn from my mistakes. There are times I want to give up but then I remember that sometimes you have to struggle in order to thrive. During the struggle there are many things going through my mind. Am I going to do well ? What can I do in order to get this done ? I have to stop and think, I always tell myself I can do it and revise my strategy if need be. With all of this being said, throughout my college years I know I will be able to succeed with this mindset if I can continue to learn from my mistakes and tr to develop all of my abilities. |
Alexis MotonOn my blog I will post my assignments as well as any daily thoughts I have. As well as my given assignments such as my 3 major blogs, My Hiraeth, Four Academic Mindsets Assignments, and finally my Film-Based Project. I hope you enjoy! Archives
